As an artist Klara Jones eludes easy categorisation. A painter and drawer, she also creates sculpture with found materials and silicone casting. As a maker and assembler of objects, Klara is perhaps best defined by the extraordinary empathy for humanity that underscores all of her creative output.
In Our Mother Klara presents a collection of new artworks that will surprise and delight visitors at one turn, and move to tears at another.
Inspired by personal and shared experiences of family, this multidimensional exhibition speaks to the uncanny, and draws on the quasi-religious sentiments that characterise the art of the middle ages. While eclectic, this collection of works is centred on the themes of belonging and compassion, with the solemn figure of Old Mother at its heart. From here the exhibition continues to surprise in its range of media and scope of ideas, the remarkable span of which mark this Sale-based artist out as one of the region’s most compelling.
Our Mother is Klara’s first solo exhibition at Gippsland Art Gallery, and once seen, it will not easily be forgotten.
