'Stoneware Pioneer' showcases the range of forms and finishes for which Hughan became well known—all intended to be functional—which led the NGV’s Curator of Decorative Arts, Kenneth Hood, to write in 1961 that Hughan was ‘Perhaps the most important stoneware potter in Australia today, no other potter has surpassed him in the technical perfection of the glazes achieved in his oil-fired kiln’.
