The third instalment in the series of Gifted exhibitions, Gifted 3 provides a fresh take on the works that have come by way of donation, or have been purchased with donated funds, and have since come to define the Gallery’s prestigious collection of art.
Gifted 3 charts the growth of the Gallery, especially over the last decade, when nearly 80% of works have entered the collection, over 95% of which have been either purchased with assistance or directly donated. Gippsland’s collection is truly a community collection—built by the people, for the people. It is the culmination of years of support for the Gallery, from both within Gippsland and from outside the region, through the generous munificence of benefactors who have desired to share their love of art with the wider world.
Gifted 3 is an exhibition full of twists, turns and surprises, and reveals the remarkable depths of the collection, especially in paintings and ceramics. While some works will be well-known to regular visitors, others will be making their debut appearance, such as the trio of large-scale paintings by Jan Senbergs from his Antarctica series, a suite of ceramics by Amy Kennedy, sculptures by Akio Makigawa, Trefor Prest, and Augustine Dall’Ava, and the extraordinary largescale ceramic work Portsea Rockpool by the late Janet Beckhouse. Collectively, this is an exhibition to inspire and delight, and to reveal the depth of generosity that has given birth to the Gallery we all enjoy today.
