Featuring almost fifty works, including some previously unseen, the exhibition leads viewers on a journey through figurative art that encourages us to complete or supply the narrative. Each work appeals to our human need to engage with figures and to connect with human emotions, and while each artist supplies the ingredients of the story, the narrative is often less than obvious!
As exhibition curator Dr Louisa Waters writes, ‘Here in Figurative Fictions, we explore the way we respond to a particular kind of figurative art, one where the viewer is drawn to extrapolate meaning, as our imaginations are invited to play with the possible scenarios and permit any number of potential narratives to unfold’.
The exhibition features works by a range of local, Australian and international artists, such as Susan Fraser, Geoffrey Ricardo, Salvador Dali, Colin Lanceley, Gillian Kline, Arthur Boyd, Juli Haas, Rodney Forbes, Euan Heng, and many others.
