Earth and moon, sky and sea, sun and stars—and everything in-between. That is the story of 'Cosmos', a collection of artworks that tap into the cosmic energy that surrounds us.

Earth and moon, sky and sea, sun and stars—and everything in-between. That is the story of 'Cosmos', a collection of artworks that tap into the cosmic energy that surrounds us and connects all living beings.

A collection to remind us that we exist not in isolation, but as entities within a greater universe, with a responsibility to respect and care for the life that surrounds us.

Beginning with our rooted connections to the earth itself, individual artworks in this exhibition evolve like organic life, throwing their collective nets to the cosmic winds to capture and draw from the energy of the universe. They take us through the earth, the sea, and the atmosphere above, into the celestial heavens—the moon, sun and beyond.

Throughout we are bound in captive wonder by the many approaches taken by artists to capture and harness this energy. Whether they speak of earth, sky, or stars, each of the artworks is part of a wider symphony of life to which we all belong. Collectively they guide our apprehension and appreciation of the cosmic forces that hold us together, giving life to everything, and shaping the world around us.

Cosmos draws heavily from the Gallery’s permanent collection of artworks by artists such as Josephine Jakobi, Rob Barron, Zak Chalmers, Lesley Duxbury, GW Bot, Fred Williams, Richard Young, Hans Knorr, Owen Rye, Kate Shone, Sam Leach, Deborah Milligan, Andrew Browne, Peter Daverington, Pam Hallandal, Kathleen Petyarre, Gillian Kline, Owen Piggott, Peter Gardiner, and Mae Adams.

These works are complemented by a suite of loans, featuring pieces by Meg Viney, Jan Learmonth, Lee Darroch, Louisa Waters, Kathy Luxford-Carr, and the late Bronwyn Oliver.
